Authorities in Arua City have stepped up efforts to improve cleanliness and restore order by removing illegal kiosks and street vendors from major streets and walkways.

The enforcement operation, which began in March 2026, saw the demolition of several makeshift stalls and kiosks, leaving many traders affected. The move follows earlier directives issued by city officials requiring vendors operating in unauthorized areas to vacate within a specified period or face enforcement action.

City authorities say the clean-up exercise is aimed at improving sanitation, reducing congestion, and enhancing the overall appearance of the city. Officials also noted that street vending has contributed to poor waste management and reduced revenue collection for the city.

During the operation, enforcement teams removed structures in busy areas such as markets and roadside trading zones. Reports indicate that some traders were caught off guard, claiming they were not adequately informed before the demolitions began.

While some vendors expressed frustration over loss of income, others welcomed the move, citing poor hygiene conditions and congestion in the affected areas. The exercise is part of a broader national effort to reorganize urban centers across Uganda, where similar operations have been conducted in cities like Kampala, Gulu, and Mbarara.

Authorities have encouraged affected traders to relocate to gazetted markets such as Arua Central Market, where space is still available for business operations.

The clean-up initiative reflects ongoing government efforts to modernize cities, improve public health, and create more organized urban environments. However, it also raises concerns about balancing urban development with the livelihoods of small-scale traders.
